Laurie Collins

Zany is one way to describe the man and his work. "Metal and wood chaos is what I do," says West Gippsland sculptor Laurie Collins. "Some of it is furniture, but my work also includes oddities, decorations and drawings." Using natural timbers and recycled "bits and pieces" Laurie says animal and bird sculptures are particular favourites, with his repertoire stretching to cats, dogs, fish, frogs, small birds and sheet metal cows. He says his work allows him to be highly creative and he has recently begun to use mini ladders in some of his furniture range.Laurie prefers to leave his pieces with a raw edge, enjoying the contrasting rough and smooth elements of each sculpture.

"Many of my pieces are left unpainted so they can weather naturally, allowing the original components to be enjoyed visually."
