Jane Bennett

Since the early 1980's Jane has specialised in painting the industrial and maritime heritage of Sydney. As a plein air painter, Jane has been the Artist in Residence at many sites including the Pyrmont Power Station, the C.S.R. Refinery & Distillery, Cockatoo Island, the Woolloomooloo Fingerwharf, Walsh Bay Wharves, White Bay, the A.G.L. Gasworks at Mortlake, Carlton United Brewery, Eveleigh Railway Workshops and Barangaroo.

Almost everything that Jane has painted has either been demolished or changed beyond all recognition: the pubs have been gentrified, working class terraces are replaced by apartment blocks and old warehouses are converted into offices. The paintings show the cycle of abandonment, decay, destruction and renewal of the inner-city landscape. Her paintings remain as a historical testament to the passing of an era.

A multiple award winning artist, Jane Bennett’s work is represented in the collections of the Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW; Department of Defence; Artbank; University of N.S.W.; University of Sydney; the Kedumba Contemporary Drawing Gallery; many corporate, Regional Gallery & Municipal Council Collections.
